Choosing a physical product for Amazon

From a product hunch to an idea you can research

You can spend a week in research tools and still be unable to say what the product is.

Jose, CEO at Stonedove

I have watched people export a spreadsheet of “winning products,” stare at it for a week, and still not be able to tell me what they want to sell. The tool did its job. The idea never became a thing you could price, pack, or show to a factory.

A feeling is a start. It is not a product.

A hunch usually arrives in a loose sentence. Kitchen gadgets are everywhere. Pet stuff always sells. I saw something on Amazon and I could do it better. Those sentences feel like progress because they point at a busy shelf. They do not name an object.

The trouble shows up the moment two people try to work on it. You picture a lid. Your partner pictures a whole set of containers. A factory hears “kitchen silicone” and quotes a mat. Now every number in the sheet belongs to a different product, and nobody notices until the sample is wrong.

What people say, and what a factory actually hears

Kitchen gadgets

What is missing
Which object?
A sentence you can work with
A lid for 8 to 12 inch mixing bowls

Something for pets

What is missing
Which pet, and what job?
A sentence you can work with
A slow-feed bowl for medium dogs

I saw it on Amazon

What is missing
Which part would you keep?
A sentence you can work with
Same job, thicker rim, no smell

Write the sentence before you open a tool

I ask for one sentence a stranger could use to find similar listings. What it is. Who uses it. What job it does. If the sentence needs a paragraph of excuses, the idea is still a category.

A silicone lid for mixing bowls in US kitchens. It fits 8 to 12 inch bowls. It goes in the dishwasher. It should not smell like a new shower curtain.

That last line matters. People skip the complaint they already know they hate, then act surprised when reviews mention it. Put the thing you refuse to ship into the sentence. It keeps the research honest.

Read it out loud. If you stumble, the factory will stumble too. Short and a little boring is better than clever. Clever titles can wait. Right now you need an object.

Five facts I will not research without

You do not need a finished spec. You need enough that a listing search and a cost sheet are about the same product. I have burned days comparing listings that were not even the same size, because nobody wrote the size down.

Collect these before the spreadsheet

A photo of a similar item

Why I ask for it
“Similar” has to be visible
What happens if you skip it
You study the wrong shelf

Packed size and weight

Why I ask for it
Amazon fees swing on both
What happens if you skip it
The quote looks fine and the fee does not

Material

Why I ask for it
Some materials have rules
What happens if you skip it
The factory quotes a cheaper substitute

How it is packed

Why I ask for it
The box is part of the product
What happens if you skip it
The listing promises a sleeve you never ordered

Your real limits

Why I ask for it
Cash, space, and time
What happens if you skip it
The idea only works if nothing goes wrong

Limits are not a mood. They are the cash you can spend on samples and a first run, the corner of the garage that can hold cartons, and how many weeks you can wait before the goods are buyable. Write them at the top of the page. Later, when a quote looks exciting, you will need them.

Wishes are allowed. They do not get a vote yet.

Everyone has wishes. Easy ads. Almost no returns. A brand that feels expensive. I write those in a separate list so they do not sneak into the decision. A wish is something you hope. A limit is something that can kill the idea today.

What actually decides, in a first pass
Cash for samples and a small first orderA limit
Space for the cartonsA limit
Weeks you can wait on freightA limit
Hope that ads will be easyA wish

Example only. Your numbers will be different.

Move on only when a stranger could take your sentence, open Amazon, and find listings that do the same job. If they cannot, you are not ready for a research tool. You are still shopping for an idea. That is fine. It is cheaper than researching three products at once and understanding none of them.

This is the same path we run in the Amazon Selling System. You approve the product, the factory, and the launch. We do the work.
